The Save Marin’s Food Community Coalition is dedicated to preserving the agricultural communities of Marin. Their mission is to nurture a vibrant local food system, reduce the risk of school closures, and garner broad public support for these goals. The coalition emphasizes the importance of all family ranches and farms. These agricultural communities not only contribute to the local culture and economy but also play a crucial role in addressing climate change. The coalition invites organizations and individuals to join their efforts in safeguarding Marin County’s agricultural heritage and future.

  1. Sustain the agricultural communities of Marin by preserving a vibrant local food system and reducing the risk of school closures.
  2. Build broad public support for revitalizing and sustaining our Marin agricultural communities and heritage.
  3. Support all of Marin County’s agricultural community – family ranching and farming communities and the businesses that depend on them.

The coalition is currently urging the National Park Service  (NPS) publicly to provide fair, reasonable, and sustainable leases that are longer, renewable, and completed in a timely manner to help secure the economic viability of these historic farms and ranches in Point Reyes National Seashore.

The Coalition’s Progress

We are excited to share that the coalition’s change.org letter, advocating for fair and sustainable leases for the farms and ranches, has garnered nearly 4,000 signatures to date. This resounding support validates the shared commitment to preserving Marin County’s vibrant local farming and food system.

On November 6th, 2023, the coalition took a step forward by submitting the letter to Superintendent Craig Kenkel at the National Park Service (NPS) ahead of the mid-November mediation, marking a pivotal moment in our advocacy to maintain this agricultural community.  Superintendent Craig Kenkel responded on November 9th, 2023, acknowledging receipt of our letter, its signatures and comments.

December 2023 update

On December 13, 2023, the coalition submitted a mediation plan to Superintendent Craig Kenkel at the NPS that outlines recommended lease terms between NPS and agricultural lease holders at the Seashore. The terms represent the best strategy to support an environmentally and economically sustainable farming ecosystem in the Seashore’s Ranchland Zone.
